Course Description

This was a previously available continuing education offering in 2022–2024, and we are making it available again free of charge without CE credit. Please complete the evaluation at the end, as we are developing an updated Men in Forensic Nursing offering.

This webinar will discuss the experience of male SANEs/forensic nurses, patient experience and considerations, and how other healthcare providers' perceptions and bias come across. This is often a hot topic. Join us and help foster a healthy discussion around this topic to advance the topic of forensic nursing and how we care for our patients.

OBJECTIVES

  • Describe how other healthcare providers perceive male SANEs
  • Address barriers to men becoming or practicing as SANEs

Andrew Mahoney MSN PD-BC SANE-A

Andy Mahoney has been providing care to sexual assault survivors for 36+ years. He has formally practiced as a SANE since 2005. He created a forensic nursing service at the New Orleans Family Justice Center and has provided multiple educational services for forensic nurses.


Paul Thomas Clements, PhD, RN

Dr. Paul Thomas Clements is a forensic psychiatric clinical specialist, and Certified in Danger Assessment. Clements has provided hospital consultation for EMT’s, Child Protective Agency personnel, trauma/emergency nurses, psychiatric providers, hospital systems, and corporate executives - each regarding vulnerability risk assessment, bullying, and decreasing the number of violent incidents in the workplace. Clements has an edited textbook: Violence against women: Contemporary examination of intimate partner violence  and he has numerous peer review publications and conference presentations. Clements has also spent time in Bolivia, working with provincial judges, prosecutors and forensic psychologists regarding enhanced assessment and intervention with children victimized by sexual aggression and other forms of violence.

Clements holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Forensic Psychiatric Nursing from The University of Pennsylvania. Clements was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nurses in 2002, and was an inaugural Associate Editor of the Journal of Forensic Nursing from 2005-2012. Most recently, he was very excited to be selected, following the application process, for induction as a Distinguished Fellow in the Academy of Forensic Nursing. ☺
