Patients who have experienced intimate partner violence often present with complex medical, psychological, social, and legal needs. Healthcare professionals may encounter situations that feel particularly challenging, especially if they are new to the field or see few patients. Effective care requires a trauma-informed, patient-centered approach that prioritizes safety, autonomy, dignity, and empowerment. This presentation will review evidence-based strategies for caring for intimate partner violence patients who present with unique challenges. Participants will explore approaches to balance medical, forensic, and psychosocial priorities. Special attention will be given to coordinating multidisciplinary services and the care of the healthcare professional. By the end of this session, participants will be able to apply trauma-informed principles to complex interpersonal violence cases, improve patient engagement and outcomes, and enhance their confidence in delivering compassionate, equitable, and effective care to survivors of interpersonal violence.

Jaclyn Rodriguez, BSN, BS, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, IVSE-C, CEO, ForMed Insight LLC Jaclyn Rodriguez earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Loyola University Chicago. She began practicing as an Emergency Room Nurse in 2003 and became a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in 2005, going on to serve as Statewide SANE Coordinator, where she helped write and implement legislation improving care for sexual assault patients across Illinois. She now works as a forensic nurse for two healthcare systems in Northern Illinois, develops and provides forensic training curricula, and serves as CEO of ForMed Insight LLC, providing case consultation and expert witness testimony on sexual assault, interpersonal violence, human trafficking, trauma, and non-fatal strangulation. Rodriguez is certified as a SANE-A, SANE-P, and IVSE-C and has developed evidence-based, trauma-informed, victim-centered training, presenting to more than 25,000 multidisciplinary professionals. She was lead author of the “Domestic to Interpersonal Violence: An Interdisciplinary Approach” workbook series. She is an active member of the Academy of Forensic Nursing, the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), and End Violence Against Women International, and currently chairs the Illinois ENA Forensic Nursing special interest group and two human trafficking healthcare subcommittees. |

Meredith Pheasant, MSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P Meredith Pheasant is a Forensic Nurse Examiner and Legal Nurse Consultant who began her career in forensic nursing in 2016. She practices at WVU Medicine’s J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, where she was instrumental in the establishment of the Forensic Nursing Program and assumed the role of Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) Coordinator upon its inception in 2019. Pheasant graduated from Duquesne University with a Master of Science in Nursing and holds national board certifications as both a SANE-A and SANE-P. Pheasant previously served as an expert consultant for the Pennsylvania State University and Texas A&M University's TeleSANE programs, supporting the delivery of specialized medical forensic examinations through telemedicine to patients experiencing sexual assault and interpersonal violence in rural and underserved hospitals across Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Texas. Her involvement in these programs contributed to expanding access to specialized forensic nursing expertise and supporting healthcare professionals in resource-limited settings. Throughout her career, Pheasant has collaborated with multidisciplinary teams across West Virginia and surrounding states, providing expert consultation, developing forensic nursing programs, and delivering specialized education to professionals responding to violence, abuse, and trauma. Her passion for advancing forensic healthcare and strengthening community responses to violence led to the establishment of Wild and Wonderful FNE: Forensic Nurse Consulting, through which she continues to support program development, professional education, and evidence-based forensic nursing practice. Outside of her professional endeavors, Pheasant resides in Morgantown, West Virginia, with her two cats. |
