Course Description

Criminal case consulting offers forensic nurses a unique opportunity to expand their expertise beyond patient care and become valuable assets to attorneys handling complex criminal cases. In this webinar, participants will learn how forensic nurses can apply their specialized knowledge of injury interpretation, forensic documentation, and medical records to assist legal teams in cases involving sexual assault, physical assault, strangulation, child and elder abuse, and other crimes with significant medical components. Attendees will gain insight into the role of the forensic nurse consultant, including case review, medical record analysis, report writing, attorney collaboration, and expert witness testimony.

  • Identify key strategies for evaluating medical and forensic evidence and effectively communicating findings to legal professionals
  • Apply forensic nursing knowledge of injury interpretation and forensic documentation to the analysis of criminal cases


PRESENTER


Teresa Devitt-Lynch is the founder of INTREPID Forensic Healthcare Consulting, a firm dedicated to forensic analysis of criminal cases involving abuse, assault, and other medical issues; expert testimony; and educational offerings located in Fargo, North Dakota. She holds a master’s degree in nursing and is board certified in Advanced Forensic Nursing and Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examinations. She is also a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy with a military nursing background in medical/surgical nursing, couplet care, ambulatory surgery, education and training, and forensic healthcare. While on active duty, Devitt-Lynch was a Tri-Service Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examiner Trainer, subject-matter expert, and expert forensic nursing consultant for military court martial proceedings. She also served on the Academy of Forensic Nursing Board of Directors from 2022–2025 and is steadily engaged in educating nurses, attorneys, and other professionals to improve the forensic healthcare in response to violent trauma.

Criteria for Successful Completion:

Live attendees must join the zoom link via the LMS site, be logged in for a minimum of 90% of the session, and successfully complete the attestation and evaluation. Upon completion, a CE certificate for 1.25 contact hours will be awarded. 

Recordings of the live session will be made available within one week of the live date. 

Asynchronous attendees must utilize the LMS to obtain resource information (if available), view 100% of recording(s), complete all modules, and successfully complete the attestation and evaluation. Upon completion, a CE certificate for 1.25 contact hours will be awarded.
