Course Description

Join us for a presentation on Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs). This session will explore how integrating legal professionals into healthcare settings enhances patient outcomes, addresses social determinants of health, and strengthens the support systems for vulnerable populations. Designed for forensic nurses, nurse practitioners, educators, social workers, and healthcare advocates, this presentation offers a practical approach to interdisciplinary collaboration that directly impacts patient care and advocacy. Attendees will gain an understanding of what MLPs are, how they function, and why they are a powerful tool in addressing complex legal and health-related challenges

Objectives:

  • Define what a MLP is, describe its core components, and explain how integrating legal services into healthcare—particularly forensic nursing—can improve patient outcomes by addressing health-harming legal needs.
  • Explain how MLPs function within healthcare settings, including the roles of interdisciplinary team members, the referral process for legal needs, and how MLPs facilitate collaboration between medical and legal professionals to improve patient care and address systemic barriers to health.
  • Articulate why MLPs are a powerful tool for addressing complex legal and health-related challenges, including how they help mitigate social determinants of health and enhance outcomes for patients facing issues such as violence, poverty, and discrimination

PRESENTER(S)

Maxine King, Directing Attorney for Indiana Legal Services, Inc., Central Indiana Medical Legal Partnership Project. Maxine has been a member of the ILS Medical Legal Partnership team for nearly five years and has been practicing law for over two decades. She served two terms as President of the Marion County Bar Association and one term as an elected Judge for Marion County, Indiana Small Claims Court. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and attending to her houseplants.

Kasey Barnes is a staff attorney for the Medical-Legal Partnership at Indiana Legal Services. Prior to becoming an attorney, she worked as a registered nurse for nearly ten years. She began her nursing career in an adult ICU before transitioning to public health nursing while she was earning a Master of Public Health. Barnes spent most of her nursing career as a nurse home visitor serving socially and medically vulnerable low-income pregnant women and their families during pregnancy and until their babies turned two. After law school, Barnes also worked as an associate attorney within the healthcare group at a large Indianapolis law firm. The combination of working as a nurse and an attorney has provided Barnes with a deep understanding of how unmet legal needs impacts overall health outcomes. When she's not working, she enjoys exercising, traveling, and spending time with her husband and two dogs.
